Miles Aldridge's pictures describe a surprisingly glossy and electromagnetic pulsating world, full of smooth, illuminated models and venomous LSD colour tones. With his phosphorescent compositions and mystical situations, he balances between contemporary and figurative photography. These very aspects of his work differentiate him from other photo artists such as Horst, Penn and Avedon, which are represented by the London gallery.
A cinematic expression marks the opus of Miles Aldrige, his dreamy and erotic style can by all means be compared to the offerings of Bergman, Dali, David Lynch, Hitchcock or Godard. “If the world would be a sufficient beauty, I would only work on location, but the world has not been designed according to aesthetic guidelines. Thus, I create my own world, instead of taking pictures within reality. I take elements from the real world, which I reinvent in a cinematic fashion. That is why, to me, a feature film by Antonioni is way more interesting than 90 minutes of real life. It is condensed emotion, condensed colour and condensed light.”
While his father, the celebrated art director Alan Aldridge, had been creating artwork for the Beatles, Aldridge was picked up from school by Eric Clapton and photographed by Lord Snowdon. Surrounded by Pop Art, rock music and his father's circle of friends, including Elton John, David Bailey and Eduardo Paolozzi, it seemed unavoidable, that he would grow to live a life, that would be artistically woven.
He studied at London Central Saint Martin's, devoted himself to illustration and created music videos before he went on to become a photographer. Within only a few years, he had been working for magazines such as W, Vogue or The Face and for commercial customers such as Paul Smith, YSL and Giorgio Armani.
Miles Aldridge, born 1964 in London, lives and works in London. His oeuvres have been shown internationally as both, solo and group exhibitions. He published several books, the most recent being “The Cabinet” (2007), featuring an introduction by Marilyn Manson and Acid Candy (2008), where Glenn O' Brien took over the task of writing an introduction. His latest book “Miles Aldride: Pictures Photographs” will be released this spring by Steidl.
