It has been 13 years since The Janet C. Demiray English Teaching Resource Center (ETRC) first welcomed its members and visitors from all over Ukraine. The ETRC is a lending library and a teacher training site for teachers of English language and American Studies. Our goal is to provide current English teaching practices, contemporary American Studies materials, and information for teachers’ professional development. We aim to improve English teachers’ knowledge of American English, assist in developing lessons and classroom teaching skills, and promote communication and professional associations among English language teachers from all regions of Ukraine.
The ETRC is located at the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.” The services and resources we provide to teachers and students are made possible through the partnership between the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The ETRC cooperates closely with Peace Corps Volunteers who work in Ukraine, the Fulbright office, the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX), American Councils, and the American Library.
The ETRC organizes weekly teacher training workshops and seminars conducted by American methodologists within the English Language Fellow Program, and supported by the U.S. Department of State. For many years English Language Fellows have trained Ukrainian teachers at the ETRC through the efforts of the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy.
Since last academic year Thomas Tasker, Senior English Language Fellow, has been presenting teacher training methodology workshops at the ETRC. The workshops are held on Tuesday evenings at 4:00 P.M., and repeated on Wednesday evenings at 4:00 P.M.
Twice a month on Friday at 3:00 P.M, for the second year, the ETRC has organized Youth Discussion Club meetings for young Ukrainians. At the meetings, moderated by Thomas, university and high school students have had opportunities to discuss current issues, debate with peers, defend their points of view.
This academic year ETRC continued to host the weekly Youth Film Club, moderated by Peter Wohlgemuth, U.S. English teacher. Teachers of English, university and high-school students are welcome to watch and discuss best American movies.
Every work day the ETRC members are welcome to use the new computers for their professional purposes, as well as for watching newly acquired movies and educational films on DVDs. There is also an opportunity to talk, instant message or make video calls with Skype software.
We are pleased to announce that you get a unique opportunity to explore and use Rosetta Stone software kindly provided by the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy. This service is FREE for the ETRC members.
The ETRC staff prepares and distributes monthly electronic newsletters for ETRC members to provide information about upcoming events, programs, seminars, guest speakers, new acquisitions and other relevant developments. Announcements from the PAS of the U.S. Embassy about exchange programs, educational projects, and competitions, as well as information from our partners, the American Library and IREX are also included. If you wish to become ETRC newsletter subscriber, please send a message to etrc_kyiv@yahoo.com and we will include your address on our mailing list.
